Why is Shenandoah National Park so Special?
Panoramic views from overlooks scattered on Skyline Drive, which runs 105 miles down the length of the 300-square-mile sanctuary, miles of trails to explore through diverse forests, breathtaking overlooks, rivers, streams, and waterfalls. Fresh water fishing the colorful brook trout and wildflowers scattered throughout the trails. It is this beauty near and far that creates the unforgettable Shenandoah experience. It’s history also runs deep.
Shenandoah National Park, the first of Virginia’s national parks -- was dedicated July 3, 1936. Running the Blue Ridge from Front Royal to Waynesboro, the long narrow preserve divides the Shenandoah Valley from the rolling Piedmont to the east. The park contains a wide array of ecology as it rises from a mere 550 feet at its lowest elevation to over 4,049 feet at its highest atop Hawksbill. |

Fishing
Shenandoah National Park contains over 90 mountain streams and their minor tributaries that serve as high quality sources for three of Virginia’s ten major drainages: Potomac, Rappahannock, and James. Over 70 of those streams contain fish, and most of those 70 contain native brook trout. Shenandoah’s streams support diverse aquatic resources including 40 fish species and hundreds of species of aquatic insects. Shenandoah National Park relies on natural fish spawning for populations. No fish are stocked, and all fish are wild. (resource: SNP website)
